Its origin dates back to the 12th and 11th centuries BCE, with the arrival of the Phoenicians who settled in its territory after defeating the Tartessians.

Phocaean Greeks

7th century BCE

Later, this area was occupied by the Phocaean Greeks, in constant rivalry with the Punics.

Romans

2nd century BCE

Its first major inhabitants were the Romans, who named it Cortex (meaning "armor" or "defense"), a name that was later respected by the Arabs and has come down to us.

The Roman civilization left two nuclei of great importance that bear witness to its glorious passage, one in the ruins of the city of Saeponia or Seponta, of which it is believed that all kinds of remnants are preserved and still today remains unexcavated, the other, the remains of the city known as "Cortes el Viejo," very close to the village.

Arabs

Until 1.485 AD

Under Arab rule, Cortex, as it was called, was under the authority of Seville, later Granada, and finally Ronda. It was ultimately conquered by San Fernando in 1.248, but shortly afterward, and until 1.485, it returned to Arab hands, leaving behind significant remnants of their culture, such as the "Torre del Paso" (Tower of the Pass).

Christians

From the 17th century onwards.

The current location of the town dates back to the late 17th century, so its urban planning and main buildings follow different criteria from the prevailing norm in the towns of the region, with a rooted Arab-style layout.

Artisan activities have represented a long tradition in our village.

Forging

Forging is a manufacturing process that involves shaping metal.

The art of Ronda's forging dates back centuries and has had a great tradition. Currently, despite its significance, there are few artisans dedicated to it.

Wood carving

​ Wood is carved through a process of shaping and polishing.

Since the late 19th century, wood carving gained great importance, with the rich forest resources of the region leading to work with noble woods such as chestnut and walnut.

Ceramics

Ceramics is the art of crafting vessels and other objects from clay.

A tradition that dates back to the work in brick and tile kilns, which is still present in Arcos de la Frontera; in the city of Ronda, glazed white ceramics are characteristic, and in the Gaucín Station, decorative artistic ceramics are crafted in murals as well as their use in construction.

Leatherworking

Leatherworking is the art of crafting various leather goods or harnesses for horse riding.

An ancient profession that turns the handling of materials such as canvas, zalgas, sheepskin, straw, rye, wool, and yarn sewn with hemp threads into a true art, creating tools and implements for life and work in the fields, such as sacks, saddle blankets, harnesses, ropers, hitches, cinches, harnesses, and headstalls.

Gastronomy

Clean air and pure waters give genuine and distinctive traits to our products.

Honey

The diligent bees tirelessly provide us with the finest sweetness of a dark chestnut-colored honey, with a robust and vegetal flavor: forest honey.

Chestnuts

In autumn, in the Valle del Genal and Yunquera, the noble chestnut trees don their costumes of lights... Each leaf is dyed, garnet red and ruby, gold... It's the moment of the chestnut burst, the time has come to light the candle and roast the sweet chestnut.

Mushrooms

In addition to variety and richness, our damp and dense forests harbor the delicacy of the gods: the mushroom. Porcini, chanterelle, morel, wild mushroom... Extraordinary delicacies born from the earth.

Olive oil

The olive of the Serranía, at its optimal level of ripeness, gives life to its noble essence, extracted in traditional oil mills, providing us with extra virgin olive oil, an authentic treasure of health.
